I am getting a vizio 32 inch widescreen hdtv lcd 720p television, and was wondering if you could watch regular digital cable on it, ( NON hi-def televison? or do you have to switch to hi def cable

Why do my DVD’s and home burned movies on DVD’s look choppy on my new widescreen LCD TV?
I just bought a new LCD TV. I have an upconvert DVD player but my home movies I made on DVD look like crap. The Audio isn’t even in sync. I think my regular DVD’s are a little choppy too. I don’t have an HDMI cable. Is it a neccessity?
